From The Commodore

November 14, 2012

To the membership:

With Thanksgiving fast approaching and our Trophy and Volunteer Recognition parties behind us, I would like to thank everyone for their help and support of the club this past season.  We were faced with many obstacles and opportunities and in the end we had a very exciting and rewarding season.

I would like to inform all that your Board of Directors have approved a very favorable and, I believe, equitable set of documents covering our relationship with the GLSS and future improvements and management of the Yacht Club property.  Now that the road map is clear and we have approved the documents we simply await the GLSS Board approval. With executed documents in hand we can all then begin to help raise the necessary funds for the building of our new facility and improvement of our property as your building Committee envisions.

The past delay in the documents was no doubt inevitable as it represents a significant departure from the status quo and required much Legal counsel from both parties to assure us we were formulating workable and legal documents preserving both the GLSS 501C3 status and our 501C7 status. Furthermore, we put decades of Yacht Club and Sailing School experience together to anticipate issues and opportunities we may face in the future.  We arrived at a very workable and enforceable management agreement which will greatly lessen the unknown for future Board members. We have provided for systematic funding of an account to insure we have necessary funds in place for facility repairs-no longer relying on current operating funds for emergencies.  We have provided the GLSS the opportunity to occupy building #4 (green metal building closest to the lake) for the long haul and allowing for significant use and appearance improvements. Most important of all, the new arrangement will allow us to move closer to our mutual goal of a truly functional multipurpose facility-one we will be proud to invite our community and friends to share with us the beauty and fun Geneva Lake offers us all. Thank you to all the LGYC and GLSS Board members who have worked unselfishly and in the best interests of our organizations to insure their harmonious future. It really is exciting and rewarding to see the cooperation and positive spirit shown by all.

We have made some changes in our office.  Effective immediately, Michael Moore is now our Operations Manager, reporting directly to the Vice Commodore. As Operations Manager, Michael will be responsible for all operational aspects of the club, including building and grounds, storage and food and beverage operations.  Michael will continue to be present in the dining room in the evenings as he has over the past season, but will also oversee the kitchen operations in his new role.  He will also oversee the maintenance all of our club property and grounds, including our club house and storage buildings. Michael is available on a limited basis throughout the winter season.  Please feel free to contact him thru email or phone on any operational questions you may have.

Pam Hilton will continue to serve as our Executive Secretary responsible for the operation of our office, our book keeping and communications with the Board and membership.  Pam directly reports to the Commodore and the Executive Committee. The Executive Secretary of our club has always been the lightning rod for so many things. Please, feel free to contact Pam with any questions or concerns you may have.  Pam will be in the office Monday thru Friday to take your calls and/or emails.

We would like to thank our Chef, Josh for his service to the club and its operations over the past years.  Josh has left our employ and we wish him well in his future endeavors.

We excitedly anticipate the approval of these final documents by the GLSS and learning how we can help with the herculean task of raising the necessary funds to fulfill our hopes and aspirations.  It will take each and every one of us to make this project a success and your Board looks forward to your help and support.

Please have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving Holiday with your families!

Regards,

John D. Simms, Jr.
