Black Point Perpetual Trophy

Ernst C. Schmidt, commodore of the Lake Geneva Yacht Club from 1931 to 1934, donated this handsome silver vase to the Cub Class in 1944 “to be awarded annually to the yacht winning that day’s race.” (In 1947, the ILYA changed the name of the Cub Class to Class X.) In recent years, the Black Point Perpetual Trophy has been awarded to the winner of a Class X championship series race. Ernst Schmidt was a long-time supporter of junior sailing on Geneva Lake and a driving force behind the establishment, in 1938, of what was then called the Lake Geneva Yacht Club Sailing School. At the time of his death, in 1977, he held the title of honorary commodore of Lake Geneva Yacht Club (from 1963) and trustee of the Sheridan Prize, and he had served the Yacht Club and the Inland Lake Yachting Association as secretary and treasurer for many decades. Black Point was the name of Commodore Schmidt’s family home and of a number of his Class A Scows.
