Fred G. Hartwell Memorial Trophy

In 1938, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence W. Sills presented the Fred G. Hartwell Memorial Trophy to the Yacht Club in memory of Mrs. Sills’s father. They designated it as a perpetual trophy to be awarded to the owner of the boat winning the season championship. Mr. Hartwell, a prominent coal merchant in Chicago after whom two Great Lakes freighters were named, had long been associated with the Class A title. In 1930 he presented a silver vase to the Yacht Club for the boat winning the Class A season championship, stating that it was to become the permanent possession of the winner of the title three out of five consecutive years. Harry N. Gifford, with skipper John F. Perrigo, won the event in 1933, 1934, and 1937 and retired the original trophy.
