Cuppy Cup

The Cuppy Cup honors the memory of Charles B. “Cuppy” Goes III, LGYC commodore in 1964 and 1965 and an outstanding competitor in Class C for many decades. He won numerous races and season championships at LGYC, and he won ILYA titles in 1941, 1954, and 1958. This elegant silver vase was originally called the Val-Lo-Will Trophy and was donated to the Yacht Club in 1945 by Mr. and Mrs. William C. Grunow to be sailed for annually by Class C yachts. According to their instructions, it was to become the permanent possession of the owner of any yacht winning the trophy three times. [Recent yearbooks say possession is after two wins; the initial text about the trophy in the 1945 yearbook and the engraving on the trophy itself say after three wins.] Buddy Melges retired the trophy after his third win in 1954 and redonated it in 1955 to be sailed for under the original deed of gift. Cuppy Goes retired the trophy after his third win in 1961. In 1997, the Goes family redonated the trophy to the Yacht Club and rededicated it in memory of their father. It is a perpetual trophy and is awarded to the winner of the Class C race on July 4.
