Walter M. Colman Perpetual Trophy

In 1977, Charles, Jeff, George, and Julie Colman presented a covered silver bowl to the Yacht Club to honor their father, Walter M. Colman. The Colman brothers competed in Class E in their boats named Sirocco, Dither, and Whisker starting in the late 1920s, and Walter Colman also competed in classes A and C earlier in that decade. He won the ILYA championship title in Class C in 1921 and 1923, and the LGYC Class E fleet championship in 1938. Forty years later, at age 75, Walter Colman was a member of the E-boat crew with his sons Jeff and Charles when they won the Sheridan Prize—the last of the four years Class E sailed in that event. Walter Colman, who died in 1983, served the Yacht Club as a member of the Regatta Committee in the 1930s and as a trustee (director) from 1948 to 1953. He was a skilled photographer, and in a motion at the board of directors meeting in August of 1946, the members thanked him “for the splendid collection of pictures” that he had donated to the Yacht Club, some of which hang in the club house today. The Walter M. Colman Perpetual Trophy is awarded to the winner of a late-season championship series race in Class E.
