The Quest Trophy

The Quest Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Class A Spring Series. First awarded for this purpose in 2023, the trophy honors the memory of Melville C. Jones (1901-1989), who served as Lake Geneva Yacht Club Commodore in 1950 and 1951. Mel sailed his Quest (I-40) and other A scows to numerous victories on Geneva  Lake including four Sheridan Prizes, three Yacht Club season championships for the Hartwell Memorial Trophy, eight Dr. Otto L. Schmidt Memorial Trophies, and five Charles H. Wacker Trophies. Mel, who was a leading sailmaker for scows and also a skipper and crew in Class E, was a charter member of the Skeeter Ice Boat Club, designed and sailed early Skeeter iceboats (Green Ghost), and was Commodore of the Northwest Ice Yachting Association. He was the first recipient (1980) of the Lake Geneva’s Marie Kramp Award for outstanding service. The 1983 LGYC Yearbook was “proudly and affectionately”  dedicated to him in recognition of his skill and his contributions to his fellow members. The Quest Trophy, as it is now known, originally belonged to Bill Bentsen, who won it as crew in a 5.5 Metre regatta in the Bahamas and donated it to Lake Geneva Yacht Club as a tribute to Mel Jones, his valued friend of many decades.
